The Great Migration Timeline
The Great Migration is a continuous, year-round journey across the Serengeti National Park and into the Masai Mara National Reserve, guided by rainfall and the search for fresh grazing. While the movement follows a general pattern, it is important to understand that nature is unpredictable, and the exact timing can vary each year. This makes every migration safari unique and exciting.
Below is a simple breakdown of the migration cycle, showing key stages and locations throughout the year. From the calving season in the southern Serengeti to the dramatic river crossings in the north and into Kenya, each phase offers a different and unforgettable wildlife experience.
Why the Great Migration Happens
The wildebeest migration is the largest mammal movement on Earth, covering over 800 kilometers across the Serengeti ecosystem. This incredible journey is driven by one simple force—survival. As the seasons change, millions of wildebeest move in search of fresh, nutritious grass, following rainfall patterns that bring life back to the plains.
During the wet season, the southern plains of the Serengeti National Park become lush and green, offering ideal grazing and safer open spaces for calving, where predators are easier to spot. But as the dry season arrives, the grass disappears, forcing the herds to move west, north, and eventually into the Masai Mara National Reserve in search of food and water.
This constant movement creates a clockwise cycle through the ecosystem—south, west, north, and back again. It is a powerful natural rhythm shaped by rain, survival, and instinct, making the Great Migration one of the most extraordinary wildlife events on the planet.

Sandra and David DesrochesPosted on TimVerified Unforgettable 7-Day Kilimanjaro Climb & 5-Day Safari with an Amazing Dream Team We started our visit with climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via the 7 DAYS LEMOSHO ROUTE followed by the 5 DAYS CLASSIC TANZANIA SAFARI. Climbing Kilimanjaro was an unforgettable 7-day journey, not only because we reached the summit, but because of the dream team that made it possible. Patrick (guide) and Gabriël (assistant guide) guided us safely, always motivating us when things became tough. You could really feel that the entire team of guides, cook and porters were on a mission for us to reach our goal in the best way possible. Setting up camp ahead of us and always greeting us with a smile. We will carry both the mountain and this dream team forever in our hearts. We also enjoyed the 5-day safari a lot. Praygod is an excellent guide and driver. We were able to spot the big 5 and experience some unforgettable moments: A pride of more then 20 lions walking past our 4x4 Land Cruiser, momma cheetah enjoying a gazelle meal with 4 cubs, momma leopard taking along her cub with prey in her mouth while climbing in a tree, big groups of elephants crossing the road, spotting a Rhino and her cub,… The overnight stays were also enjoyable and comfortable. Even in the tented lodges in the middle of the Serengeti and at the edge of the Ngorongoro crater we had all the comfort and delicious food we needed. Thank you Patrick and team! Thank you Praygod! Thank you Tanzania Joy Tours!
