Having opened in October 2018 in the fabulous Eastern Serengeti, Lemala Nanyukie matches the same outstanding standards of comfort and service as the other properties in Lemala’s luxury collection, which includes the Serengeti’s Lemala Kuria Hills Lodge and Lemala Mpingo Ridge in Tarangire together with Hamerkop House by Lemala in Arusha.
Meaning ‘endless plains’ in the Maasai language, the Serengeti is undoubtedly one of the world’s most celebrated wilderness areas. Lemala Nanyukie is located a 60-minute drive east of the Seronera Airstrip in the park’s central region, and is superbly located with outstanding views across these fascinating ‘endless plains’. The camp itself sits on a grassy savanna dotted with rocky kopjes and shaded by ancient giant acacia trees.
This area of the Serengeti is crossed by the thrilling wildlife spectacle of the annual wildebeest migration, but also has high-density game-viewing at all times and is well-known for its large concentration of cats, so much so that until recently this area was set aside for scientific research into predators, especially cheetah. As such, Lemala Nanyukie is open year-round, and safari activities like game drives and walks will be accompanied by Lemala’s highly-knowledgeable and experienced guides.

Being the sixth largest national park in Tanzania, Tarangire remains slightly off the main safari circuit but is a terrifically scenic park featuring classic African savannah, green hills, woodlands and rivers and is especially famous for its large herds of elephants, superb birdlife and giant baobab trees. Guests at Lemala Mpingo Ridge will enjoy a real sense of wilderness and excellent game viewing, and it’s both a relaxing standalone destination and a great place to start a safari that also combines Lemala properties in the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti.
Each of the 15 spacious tented suites have been carefully positioned to maximize not only the sensational views over the Tarangire valley but also to take advantage of cooling breezes during warm weather.

How fortunate we are to share this protected space with one of the most majestic tribes in the world – the proud Maasai, still living their ancient ways up in the thin crisp air of the Ngorongoro Highlands.
The Ngorongoro Tortilis Camp respects this space and incorporates the Maasai into much of the activities of this Tortilis Camp. Ngorongoro Tortilis Camp is a special oasis nestled under a forest canopy at the end of a valley. A magical place of dappled light, surrounded by the lushest green vegetation, and buzzing with an energy of this high altitude wonderland. Just 13km away is the Ngorongoro crater rim. The crater itself is a must-visit wonder of nature, but you’ll be happy to be staying away from the cold and mist which envelops the crater rim for much of the year.
This Tortilis Camp has many activities to enjoy. Join the Maasai staff for a hike to the top of Mount Makarot a steep and exciting challenge with a peak over 3100m and when you reach the summit enjoy the rewards with spectacular views of the Serengeti, a peek into the Ngorongoro crater, and, on a clear day, Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.
On offer too is an authentic Maasai wedding with the local tribe. A pulsating experience and unique spectacle with you and your partner at the very centre of it all.
Marera Valley Lodge, located on the outskirts of Karatu town about midway between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater, is close to the village of Rhotia. Convenient to the main road, this elegant lodge has stunning views over the valley to the hills beyond. Our large main building has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating areas with views to the pool and the beautiful nearby hills. Enjoy a drink or an alfresco lunch on the spacious verandah overlooking the pool. Relax in the bar and lounge area with a cosy fire in the cooler months and take your meals in the large dining room. You’ll find the welcoming reception area and gift shop here as well. The Rosemary Spa is located in a quiet corner of the garden and offers massage and other treatments for your relaxation. The cottages are set in lush tropical gardens and a walking path circumnavigates the extensive organic vegetable garden.
Our well-trained chefs take pride in creating a selection of tasty, healthy dishes, all from local produce sourced from our own garden as well as nearby farms and plantations.
Family Safari FAQs
Get clear answers to the most common questions about planning a family safari holiday in Tanzania, including safety, best travel times, activities for children, what to expect on safari, and everything you need to prepare for an unforgettable family adventure in the wild.
Yes, family safaris are designed with safety as a top priority. Professional guides lead all activities, ensuring safe distances from wildlife and controlled environments during game drives. Lodges and camps are also family-friendly, offering secure spaces, trained staff, and comfortable settings so parents can relax while children enjoy the adventure safely.
Most safari experiences are suitable for children aged 5 years and above, as they can better understand wildlife and enjoy longer game drives. However, some lodges offer special private activities for younger children, making it easier for families with kids of different ages to enjoy the experience together.
A family safari offers incredible opportunities to see the Big Five—lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino—along with giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species. Every game drive feels like a new discovery, with animals seen in their natural habitats across iconic parks.
A duration of 5 to 10 days is ideal for a family safari. This allows enough time to explore multiple national parks, enjoy relaxed game drives, and include fun activities without rushing. A well-paced itinerary ensures both adventure and rest for children and adults.
Yes, safari vehicles are specially designed for comfort, space, and safety. They offer open rooftops for better viewing, cushioned seating, and plenty of room for families. This makes long drives enjoyable while ensuring everyone has a clear view of wildlife action.
Yes, many family safaris include visits to local communities such as the Maasai. These cultural experiences allow families to learn about traditions, dances, crafts, and daily life, creating a deeper understanding of Tanzania’s rich heritage alongside wildlife adventures.
It is best to pack light, breathable clothing in neutral colors, comfortable walking shoes, hats, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Binoculars and cameras are highly recommended to capture wildlife moments. Warm clothing may also be needed for early morning game drives.
The dry season from June to October is the most popular for wildlife viewing, as animals gather around water sources and vegetation is thinner. However, the green season also offers beautiful landscapes, fewer crowds, and great photography opportunities, making safaris enjoyable year-round.
Tanzania is home to some of Africa’s most famous safari destinations. The Serengeti National Park is known for its vast plains and the Great Migration, while the Ngorongoro Crater offers incredible wildlife viewing in a unique natural setting. Other highlights include Tarangire National Park, famous for its large elephant herds, and Lake Manyara National Park, known for its tree-climbing lions and scenic beauty. Each destination offers a different experience, making Tanzania perfect for a diverse family safari.
Both Tanzania and Kenya offer incredible family safari experiences, but they have slightly different advantages. Tanzania is known for its vast, less crowded parks like the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, making it ideal for a more relaxed and immersive safari. Kenya, on the other hand, is famous for the Masai Mara National Reserve and often offers shorter travel distances and a wide range of family-friendly lodges. For families seeking a quieter, more natural experience, Tanzania is often preferred, while Kenya is great for convenience and variety.
