Selous Game Reserve is the largest fauna reserve in the world, spanning over 55,000 km², almost four times the size of the Serengeti. Selous is considered important enough to be a World Heritage Site in which the lucky few can experience a safari in absolutely wild and unspoiled bush. The reserve was named after Englishman Sir Frederick Selous, a famous big game hunter and early conservationist, whose adventure books on Africa became best sellers in Victorian England. Among its unique attractions, the reserve contains one third of all the African hunting dog population in the world. Witness the majesty of large migrations of elephants, get close up with all the Big Five, and even enjoy game fishing while you are here.

Located on the shores of this tranquil year-round waterway, the Rufiji River Camp, with just 20 semi-luxury tents, gives guests a front-row seat to the wonderful wilderness and ample wildlife of the region. Animals often come down to the river to drink, offering visitors a privileged show from the camp's overlooks. Hundreds of hippos line the river and groups of crocodiles sun themselves on its sunny banks.
Today, join your experienced ranger guide for a full or half-day game drive through the Selous. The itinerary and timing of your excursion are decided in the moment by each group depending on guests' wishes and recent animal movements. Drives often visit one or more of the region's lakes to see groups of animals drinking.
One of the most exciting opportunities for the more adventurous is a walking safari. The Selous Game Reserve is one of the few parks in Tanzania where visitors can travel on foot and relive the experience of some of the early explorers. Choose a general wildlife trail or one that is focused on a special interest. Of course, an armed ranger will accompany you at all times. It is the one of the best ways to fully appreciate the landscape and learn about the wildlife from their point of view.
In the afternoon, explore the far reaches of the Rufiji River's many lakes and tributaries on a boat safari. Visit numerous points and look out for the animals that make this river their home. End the day watching a magnificent sunset paint the river in vibrant colors from your floating vantage point.
